Discovering at a young age how baking calms me down and makes me happier is like drawing a curtain across my convoluted experience with childhood grief, depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Baking itself, was not a distraction but rather an art therapy. I found something I truly enjoy. I learned that I can make something wonderful and delicious through the work of my hands. The kitchen was a territory I have full rein in, at last I am finally in control. I am finally allowed to express what I couldn’t verbalise.
In the absence of words for the heaviness of what I was carrying, it was kneading, whisking, and piping that proved I can still make a life of meaning, and that one day, my own story of resilience could help hold space for others.
